Jim said these tips got in the way of his huntin' & fishin' but please enjoy the ones he did!!
JIM LAWLER GETTIN' OUTDOORS TIP OF THE WEEK 12/29/12

As we head into 2013, hunting season is in full motion. It is hard to decide what to hunt with all seasons open. December has been a pretty good fishing month also.

There is always new stuff coming out to help hunters get close or trick their prey into range.
On thing that has come out the last few years is the improved pop up blind. I have one and so does my dad, but the old man I hunt with a lot don't like them.

We have a small duck pond with a food plot at the edge of it so over Christmas holidays we
decided to set my pop up blind at the edge of the duck pond where we could get close to the ducks on the water to Video and watch the food plot for ole split toe.

We set it up in a perfect place and put our stools in it for our return the next morning before day to settle in for some hunting and duck TV.

Well here is my tip about pop up blinds. Make sure you anchor them good because it don't take much wind to put one in the duck pond and they do not float. When we got there in the dark, all we had was two stool sitting on open ground and if there were ducks on the pond, they were in the half sunk blind.

It would have been fun, but we ended up hunting the old fashioned way by becoming one with the forest, what ever that means.

Happy New Year

JIM LAWLER GETTIN' OUTDOORS TIP OF THE WEEK 12/22/12

It is Christmas and good hunting weather. There have been a lot of sad things happen this past year, but this is a time to count our blessings and be thankful for all the happy things that have happened.

Thanks for listening to my tips this year and I hope some of them were useful.

Merry Christmas from my family to yours.

JIM LAWLER GETTIN' OUTDOORS TIP OF THE WEEK 12/15/12

Christmas is right around the corner and that means just about every hunting season is in from duck to dove. Wilcox County does not  have a fall turkey season, and I believe the turkeys know it by the way they  are coming to food plots.

It is the time of the year to look for scrapes and put your game cameras on  them. The big bucks usually don't show themselves until late so this weeks  tip is, be patient and maybe you will get a shot at a big one as the rut  begins.

Merry Christmas

JIM LAWLER GETTIN' OUTDOORS TIP OF THE WEEK 12/01/12

It is the first day of December and opening day of duck season. I'll probably miss today's show because we will be duck hunting.

Been a lot of big deer killed so far this year but it don't seem to be as many ducks as last year where we hunt. Plenty of water, and that may have them spread out.
Usually the creek is a series of water holes full of ducks but this year it is
full and flowing.

There is always a need for a dry towel when you duck hunt, so put you a few paper towels In a ziplock bag and carry it in your hip pocket. Some times a couple of dry paper towels are priceless on a duck hunt.

JIM LAWLER GETTIN' OUTDOORS TIP OF THE WEEK 11/24/12

Thanksgiving - been out of school all week and we all have been thinking and
praying for the best for Hudson Steele. So far he has done well and I know
everyone will be restless until he is back home. There is a lot of stuff going
on in this holiday season, but none of it is very important when one of your
friends is not able to enjoy it with his family and friends. I hope to see
Hudson with a big buck on Big Daddy’s page soon.

I did go hunting  Wednesday afternoon and was lucky enough to kill a big buck. Pop said that one must have gotten run on to the place by deer dogs because nobody had any idea  that buck was around.

As it turned out, killing the deer was the easy part. We could not get dad or anyone to help load the deer. Big Daddy answered, but he was in the river. So this weeks tip is to anyone who can not load a 200 lb. deer onto a pickup with just a kid and an old man.

Locate a dirt pile  or a ditch you can either drag your deer up on or back your truck down in. We drug our deer to a bank and backed the truck in the ditch and the deer slid  right in. So be creative, save your back and buy a big buck ticket before you
hunt. I have got to get me another one.

JIM LAWLER GETTIN' OUTDOORS TIP OF THE WEEK 11/17/12

Note: I don’t know where this came from, his Dad must have shot a deer in the
horns with an arrow. BDL

Looks like deer season is off to a good start with several of my friends
getting good deer last week end hunting the special youth season.

This morning begins gun season for everybody and I expect some of the grown ups will
be taking the first shot from the stand this week end.

Lets everyone hunt safe and remember whether you are hunting with a gun or bow, always shot
the deer not the horns. This tip is not directed to anyone in particular, Dad.

JIM LAWLER GETTIN' OUTDOORS TIP OF THE WEEK 11/10/12

If you have looked around you have noticed Fall is in full bloom and that
puts every deer hunter in the mood to hunt.

There is a special youth deer season this weekend that runs through Monday
and I am sure there will be some kids in the woods around here. We went
yesterday afternoon and took Lizzie. We saw a few but because we were late, we
spooked everything we saw. It will be Sunday before I will get to go again but
with what we saw yesterday I am encouraged about this years season.

This brings me to my tip this week. We spooked deer yesterday in areas we had
not scouted and did not expect to see them where they were. Never under estimate
the value of scouting. Mid day is the best time to see what trees still have
acorns or when they are feeding. Use trail cameras, they are the real deal.

JIM LAWLER GETTIN' OUTDOORS TIP OF THE WEEK 11/03/12

Safety is always the most important issue in every outdoor activity. So this
week let me give you a safety tip. We have a .22 rifle that hangs in a gun rack
at our screen porch at the pond . It stays there because we never know what
vehicle we may be when we go to the pond and between beavers, snakes and turtles  sometimes you just have to pop something with that .22.

Well always check your barrel before shooting, the other day a dirt dauber
had plugged the barrel of the gun and that could have been dangerous. So if you
have a utility gun, keep in clean and always check your barrel before you shoot.
There is nothing that needs shooting so quick that you can't check your gun.

JIM LAWLER GETTIN' OUTDOORS TIP OF THE WEEK 10/27/12

Note: this was a 01/28/12 tip we redid because a study came out his week
about leaving brush, after cutting timber, for your wildlife. Jim was ahead of
the game. BDL

With this being the last week end of deer season, there has been a lot of
talk about rabbits. If you have ever heard of Uncle Remus then you know what
ever you do, never throw Bro Rabbit in a briar patch. Pop tells me to pay
attention to natural habitat and I am still not sure what that means. I do know
this, whenever they cut timber on our land they make brush piles from the
underbrush and sometimes they are as big as a pickup. These piles are great
hiding places for rabbits and birds. We call these piles Rabbitat.

So the next time you cut timber ask the man on the feller-buncher to build you some  Rabbitat. You will be surprised at the animals that will use these piles. Put
you a bird house by one of these piles and you might get a chick-a-dee to nest
there.
JIM LAWLER GETTIN' OUTDOORS TIP OF THE WEEK 10/20/12

This time of the year is one of the best to be gettin outdoors. The cool   mornings make the snakes almost immobile and you know that soon they will be be
gone for the winter. We have had just enough rain to bring the food plots up
but  there is a lot of food still in the woods.

Take time to check out all of  your shooting houses and be sure all the wasps are gone and it might be a good  idea to spray something to run the spiders out too. Open stands don't have a bug  problem but be sure they are secure. A safe outdoor outing begins when you leave  the house. Always tell someone where you are going, there is a lot of stuff that  can go wrong in the woods so this weeks tip is always be sure someone knows  where you are when you go to the woods, you may simply run out of gas on a trail  ride and it is a long walk up those hills.

JIM LAWLER GETTIN' OUTDOORS TIP OF THE WEEK 10/13/12

Fall is definitely here. Leaves and acorns are falling and there is a
little nip in the air. When you start hunting the first of the season, all of
the animals seem to have forgotten about hunters. It don't take the squirrels
long to remember what the sound of a 20 gauge means. I believe they communicate with one another some how because sometimes there will be three or four squirrels in a tree and by the time you get in shooting position, they are
gone.

I know I recommended not to kill your doves grave yard dead so
they  are easier to find, that is not so for squirrels in hills. Be sure to kill
them  dead or you will spend a lot of time in a bottom you did not want to go
in.
JIM LAWLER GETTIN' OUTDOORS TIP OF THE WEEK 10/06/12

Still a little warm to be hunting, but we plan on squirrel hunting this
week end. Probably will not take Dexter with the snakes still crawling. Usually
when we squirrel hunt along the creek, we can scout for wood ducks. They will
be  in the creek eating acorns when they start dropping. I know you and Mr.
David  Gaston are talking ducks today and it is on of my favorite things to do.
I have  never hunted big water just the creek and our small duck pond, but it is
fun.  The problem we have is retrieving our ducks. We usually use a reel and rod
with  a Devil's Horse to get them in. This year I have Dexter, but he is not as
big as  a wood duck so I guess we will just reel them in.

This brings me to this  weeks tip - if you duck hunt on a creek and jump shoot wood ducks, they  always  fly up or down the creek over the water when you jump them, so find those holes  they feed and roost in, one person go up the creek and one go down  the creek, a  third person flush the ducks and you will get a lot of action.
Take a reel and  rod, because that water is cold.
JIM LAWLER TIP OF THE WEEK 09/29/12

They say a dog is man's best friend. I don't know who first said that, but
that is a very true statement. My dog Dexter don't care whether I win or lose,
make A's or C's, or if I have been good or bad. He is always glad to see me and
ready to go, and it don't matter to him where we are going. There are very few
people like that.

With that said my tip this week is, everybody needs to
experience the love of a dog so even if you do not need a hunting dog, get you a
best friend.

I would like to ask the Dr. A question - Can you teach an
old dog new tricks?

JIM LAWLER GETTIN' OUTDOORS TIP OF THE WEEK 09/22/12

Fall seems to be here and these cool mornings are great. Between all the
things the grown ups are fretting over like letting big bucks out of pens and
not being able to paddle through the locks, leave the debate to the politicians
this weekend and focus on this pretty weather. I am sure those are very
important issues. But when you are 9 and in school when the weather is like this
we kind of block those things out and get out of doors for a trail ride an hope
the grown ups don't really hit one another over these things.

My tip this  week is simply this to everyone that seems so upset. Don't be so serious about  these things it will probably be ok. According to the grown ups I am around,
things are never as good as they seem and they are never as bad as they seem. We
will be working on food plots this week end that is always fun mainly because
there is to test after we are through.
JIM LAWLER GETTIN' OUTDOORS TIP OF THE WEEK 09/15/12

Well it looks like this hunting season will be promising this year because
Friday afternoon I killed two doves with one shot. A first for me. I am looking
forward to squirrel season and training my dog Dexter to tree , he already is a
hunter.
Deer season is my favorite and it looks like a good crop of acorns again this
year. My dad says we have to let the little bucks walk if we are going to have
big bucks, but that is hard to do sometimes. Pop has a rule on deer that the
next buck that is killed has to be bigger than the last one you killed. You can
not kill but three and I will be glad when I can get in on making some of these
rules. Sometimes I think those rules depend on how far we have to drag the
deer.
This weeks tip is if you hunt with old hunters, all that stuff you
see on TV is like watching cartoons because it is not like that in the real
world.

JIM LAWLER GETTIN' OUTDOORS TIP OF THE WEEK 09/08/12

We had a awful lot of rain last week and we had a chance to ride and check
our roads yesterday. It is unreal how much water damage these rains did.

So this weeks tip is, be careful if you have not been on your property since
the last rain. That pipe you assume is under the road may be gone. There is also
a lot of debris in the roads and trails so be prepared to clean out your roads
to get to your destination.

09/01/12 Jim Lawler Gettin' Outdoors Tip Of The Week

Dove season comes in next Saturday - if you hunt around tall grass - try not to kill your doves graveyard dead. Try to leave flopping, they will br easier to find. Jim
08/25/12 Jim Lawler Gettin' Outdoors Tip Of The Week

With the temperatures a little cooler in the mornings now, Fall is right
arrond the corner. Go through your hunting stuff and get it ready for the
season. Start with your dove stuff. Clean out your dove stool and check the battery's in your MoJo Dove. If you practice with sheets try to set up so the skeet goes above you like a dove and use up those old shells.

Always remember if you go on a dove shoot on someone else's land, clean up your stand when you leave and thank the landowner for letting you hunt.
08/18/12 Jim Lawler Gettin' Outdoors Tip Of The Week

Well summer is gone for me with school starting back this week. I did get
to re-locate a snapping turtle found in the road. They say there is a two
turtle  limit on turtles now since China has run out and folks are catching ours and  sending them to China. That is hard to understand.

Saw catalpa worms yesterday and plan on fishing with them before the week end is over. Don't know where they have been but they are here now.

Bush hogging arrond our millet field and saw a spotted fawn, so watch for them because the grass is high. This brings me to this weeks tip -

Don't go into your dove field without practicing your shooting. Gather up those old shells and go out and shoot a few skeets. It might remind you how hard it is to hit those doves. You need to get rid of those old shells anyway and check out your gear. 7 doves is my best on a dove shoot, but I plan on gettin the limit this year.

JIM LAWLER GETTIN' OUTDOORS TIP OF THE WEEK 08/04/12

This weeks Gettin' Outdoors tip of the week is really a question for big
Daddy's board of free advisors. Where are the Catalpa Worms? Every year by this time we have had catalpa worms to fish with. We have checked every tree on the creek for a month now, with no luck. I was just wondering were they early and we missed them, did the birds get all of them or are they late?
Somebody call in and give us a catalpa worm answer.

JIM LAWLER GETTIN' OUTDOORS TIP OF THE WEEK 07/28/12:

I know the gator hunt is coming up, but if you are not involved with that it might be time to start thinking about those dove fields.
It is real hard to get doves to come to small fields and still be friends with the possum sheriff. If you planted brown top millet last year I think you will be surprised at how well it came back this year.
Take time to clip the tops of part of your millet to make it seed later for longer use of the field. I guess the afternoon rain showers hit ours just right because it sure made a lot of seed. We are going to check on it today and start carving it into a dove resort. There have been three different hatchings of young turkeys using this millet but this weekend they are going to get Dexter my Jack Russell and they will get a life lesson on survival.
